SEO: What it is and Why it is Important

If you own a business, then you have probably heard the acronym SEO thrown about like confetti, especially in relation to your website and social media.

So, what the hell is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Kind of a dry term to read, but it is incredibly important to your business’s reach – as we’ll explain.

A poorly optimised website means that when people Google something related to your products or services, you don’t show up in the results! People rarely look beyond the first page of results, so if you’re not there, you are not being seen.

How search engines work is by taking the keywords and phrases that are Googled and trawling the web and compiling all of the most relevant results – aka the websites with the words corresponding with what is searched. For example, if you Google ‘cheap clothes for women’, your top results would be those that have these words present in their content.

Now, these SEO keywords can be in the content, the headings, the meta description, and in permalinks. There are other factors, but these are the most important!

Down to the line, SEO is all about generating traffic to your website through the use of keywords and phrases. Having a blog section on your website is another excellent way to increase traffic!

Get your business out there and get seen! But, don’t just rely on SEO to get traffic to your website. You need to keep a solid Google Rating by making sure that your website is mobile optimised, looks great, and is user-friendly; SEO will get people to look at your website, but it won’t make them stay.

As Wendy Piersall says, “Google only loves you when everyone else loves you first.”
