Hashtags for Business: What is their purpose?

Hashtags. A buzzword that many of us instantly recognise when we’re talking about social media. But, what is a hashtag? What is the true purpose of a hashtag? Why are they such a prominent buzzword?

Let’s start with the easy question. Hashtags are metatags used for filtering and organising content. They are used every day across many social media platforms, with Instagram and Twitter being the two most dominant. The main idea behind hashtags – aka their true purpose beyond being trendy catchphrases – is to allow people to connect over mutual interests, no matter where they are on the planet!

Hashtags are a great tool, no matter if you’re someone who uses Instagram to keep in contact with family and friends or someone who is a business owner, blogger, organisation, or a company. We’ve outlined a few of the other great benefits of using hashtags below!

Community Connection

In using hashtags as a search tool, you can easily find other people who have similar interests to you or your business. This means you can interact with these people, comment on their posts, and become a true part of the community.

Curating your own content with the correct hashtags also allows these communities to find you!

Hashtag #FollowThis

Following hashtags means that they will appear in your feed daily. Curating your feed in this way makes it easier to keep up with engagement in your community, and also keeps you in the loop with any hashtags that you’ve created! Speaking of…

Create your own hashtag. This is a crucial step, and it’s pretty easy as well. All you have to do is turn the name of your business into a hashtag. For example, our hashtags are #brokatstudio and #brokat. Every post on Instagram should have at least one of these personalised hashtags, and you can encourage people to follow.

Customised hashtags are also great for your followers, and they’ll get a lot of traction if you host competitions and giveaways on socials. You’ll see a lot of clothing and makeup brands use personalised hashtags. Check some out for inspiration!

Location, Location, Location

You can use your local city, town, or country as a hashtag. This allows you to connect more with local audiences. If you are a business in Brisbane like us, use the hashtag #brisbanebusiness or #smallbrisbanebusiness.

Build Your Identity

As you’ve probably picked up already, with hashtags it always comes back to the community. Building your identity on social media requires attaching yourself to and engaging with relevant communities. Respond to comments and tags, stay up to date with relevant hashtags, and curate engaging content to build your business’s online identity.

By using the right hashtags, you will attract a whole new audience to your business. You will discover people in your niche as they begin to like your posts. Other people will then start to find your business!

Hashtags are beneficial for everyone in some way, but businesses should absolutely take advantage of this feature.
